ABI or Acquired Brain Injury is considered a non-traumatic brain injury that happens after birth; this can result in the dysfunction of the nervous system. A non-traumatic brain injury can be caused by an aneurysm, stroke, suffocation (lack of oxygen to the brain), Infection, or disease. A TBI or Traumatic Brain Injury a mechanical injury caused by an external force such as a fall, sports injury, motor vehicle accidents, and physical assaults. Acquired Brain Injury Services: An Integration of Community Services for DMHAS Consumers with Brain Injury. The mission of the ABI Community Services is to facilitate PERSON-CENTERED RECOVERY and encourage personal empowerment for persons living with acquired brain injury and mental illness.

Brain Injury Alliance of Connecticut (BIAC): We sponsor approximately 18 support groups throughout Connecticut, giving individuals with brain injuries and their caregivers the opportunity to connect and share their stories. Facilitated by both an individual with a brain injury or a family member, and a professional, the support groups are extremely fluid in responding to the interests of their attendees.
